Public lectures at OSU: amazing things are near

On February 2 Orenburgers attended for the sixth time Public lectures at Orenburg State University. It has become a tradition to welcome the event on the eve of the Day of Science.
One hour before the start the hall of the ground floor in the library was full of people who studied the exhibits of professors’ and students’ inventions.
About 250 citizens have visited lectures this year.
Sergey Miroshnikov, correspondent member of the Russian Academy of Science, acting director of the OSU Institute of Bioelementology talked on “Toxic chemical elements — real and implicit threats”.
Alexi Lubichankovsky, senior lecturer from the Department of Geography and Regional Studies titled his lecture “Behind the mask of civilization”. Threatening masks from Africa, harrowing roar of jaguar and eyes of orangutan met the ones who attended this lecture.
“Orenburg region in the cultural mirror: what do we see and how are we looked at” was the topic presented by Eugeny Semenov, senior lecturer from the Department of Geography and Regional Studies. He accompanied his talk with colorful slides of architecture pieces, estates of world class writers and poets who had been living in our province, shots from films.
Valery Makarov from the Faculty of Physics 3 years ago talked about experimental verification of gravity waves predicted by Einstein 100 years ago. This year the lecturer demonstrated how the world had changed 3 years after this invention.
