The International Steppe Forum of the Russian Geographical Society finished its work at OSU.

Through 4šdays its participants discussed modern problems on preserving and rational use of natural resources of the steppe territories in Eurasia. The steppe capital welcomed guests from former countries of Soviet Union and other countries like Germany, Denmark, Ukraine, Moldova, Azerbaijan, Lithuania, Kazakhstan. Eminent scientists from different countries, Corresponding Members of the Russian Academy of Science, staff members from research institutes and universities. Janna Ermakova, OSU Rector and Yuri Berg, Orenburg region Governor greeted the audience during the Plenary meeting.

The conference agenda counted more than 100špresentations split into 7šsections. The reports reflected the most vital studies on steppes: land use, monitoring of ecosystems, nature conservation, flora and fauna status. Besides these global issues the scientists discussed the sand lands protection, forest preservation including the Buzuluk forest, oil and gas developments and their impact on landscapes, etc.

“The logo of our Forum is “To keep what is left and to return what is possible” using nature-like technologies instead of aggressive engineering methods. It is possible because nature itself evolves and develops. We founded in Orenburg the unique in Russia and in the world the Steppe Institute. It collects and studies the best practices in Eurasia steppes preservation”š— commented Alexander Chibilev, Director of the Steppe Institute.

The VIII International Steppe Forum passed a resolution. It has recommendations how to preserve steppe territories, law initiatives to have government support for agricultural lands development, call for federal and local authorities to stop ploughing up virgin lands, etc.
